Generative AI and the Workforce
Artificial intelligence is becoming a huge part of our lives with its immense capabilities and growing prevalence. AI can be used for so many purposes that it has begun replacing workers and eliminating the need for a human workforce in many areas including business. According to McKinsey’s report on how AI is affecting the US workforce, 12 million people could change jobs due to Generative AI by the year 2030. AI could automate and eliminate jobs including those in customer service and other lower-wage jobs forcing millions of workers to need to learn new skills and acquire training. McKinsey predicts that Generative AI could automate up to 30% of work by 2030.
There is going to be a major shift in the labor market with growth of higher-wage jobs that require human input including social, emotional, and digital skills. Although AI can replace some jobs completely, it cannot fully substitute for human interaction and the value that personal communication can have. However, AI can be used as a tool by workers to enhance and alleviate some of their work as it can automate certain parts of any business job including marketing, analytics, and accounting. AI can complete mundane tasks with data, writing, research, and analytics so that workers can focus on strategy and decision-making using critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence that AI cannot replicate. Overall, generative AI is causing major changes in the US labor market and will continue to advance and force entire sectors in the workforce to evolve and advance with it.
